I just listened to an interview with Karl Deisseroth, and it was absolutely fascinating!
One of the discoveries he helped pioneer sounds almost like science fiction!
Scientists took a gene from a tiny, single-celled green alga that produces a light-sensitive protein and introduced it into specific neurons in animal brains. This protein works almost like a light switch, allowing scientists to turn those neurons on or off using light, without directly activating surrounding neurons that don't have the protein. Imagine being able to control specific brain cells with light! This technology, called optogenetics, has opened up incredible possibilities for understanding the brain and potentially treating neurological disorders.
What fascinated me even more was the imagination behind this discovery. Who would have thought that something from a tiny green alga could help us understand the human brain? It took scientists from different fields, thinking outside the box and connecting ideas that seemed completely unrelated.
It reminded me how important curiosity and imagination really are.
For decades, education and research have emphasized becoming an expert in one particular field. But with AI, I think things are changing. Knowledge is becoming more accessible than ever, and curiosity, creativity, and the ability to connect the dots may become even more valuable.
One thing that impressed me was that Deisseroth mentioned how widely he reads, far beyond his own field. You never know when something you learn just for fun might inspire a completely different idea years later.
Your generation faces so many distractions, but you also have incredible resources that previous generations could only dream of. With AI, you can explore almost anything that sparks your curiosity, whether it's science, mathematics, literature, art, philosophy, or something you've never even heard of before.
I think AI will be especially empowering for people who are curious and willing to learn. The key is to use it to expand your thinking, not replace it.
And that's really what I want to share with you. You have so many talents and interests, and there's such a fascinating world out there waiting to be explored.
Don't feel that everything you learn has to serve a purpose, lead to a career, or become an achievement. Read something simply because it's interesting. Ask silly questions. Explore unfamiliar subjects. Follow an idea just to see where it takes you.
Learning doesn't always need a destination. Sometimes the joy of discovering something new is the greatest reward.
I hope you'll always keep your curiosity and imagination alive, and most importantly, have fun exploring this amazing world! ??
